Is this ride suitable for Learning and Provisional riders?
At a minimum, we recommend that you be a competent provisional licence rider. The days will be reasonably long, and we will be travelling at speed limits. Roads will be technical, with plenty of corners and altitude changes – these can be exhausting of you’re not used to them which can rapidly become dangerous for you and those around you.
Do I need a National Parks pass?
Yes, you will need a National Parks pass. You can purchase this pass in Jindabyne just before we enter the park. Read about the park on the NPWS website.
Is the accommodation within the National Park?
Yes, we will be staying in Thredbo village.
Will you be leading the rides?
Yes, we will be leading the ride to and from Thredbo, as well as a selection of rides in the Snowy Mountains. We will provide GPX files for you to load on your GPS devices. Having said that, we do expect that you have a suitable level of self sufficiency, and are able to find your own way should you get separated from the group (this is unlikely to happen)
Do I need insurance?
We recommend that you have basic private medical insurance, which covers ambulance, and roadside assist. Our Paul Riley is a qualified mechanic and may be able to reasonably help with roadside repairs. Several in our group are first aid qualified, and have participated in accident scene management. Please make sure that you and your ride are in peak form.
Depart Sydney and head south west to the beautiful Snowy Mountains around 6 hours from Sydney.
Stay in Thredbo for three nights and use this as a base for exploring the tremendous roads of the region. Late November early December are the best times to enjoy this region where you can be riding alpine roads and taking in the raw summer landscape then an hour later be in the midst of some of New South Wales country towns for lunch before returning to Thredbo each night. Australia’s Snowy Hydro scheme tours are an optional treat as are cable car rides from Thredbo for a sky high restaurant dinner (if available- maintenance often causes this trip to be cancelled in summer). Return to Sydney via the New South Wales coastline and the second oldest national park in the world.
